The first thing Bennett says you should do after an accident is to stay calm.
“Being in a car accident is very stressful, so the first thing you should do is just stay calm and, most importantly, stay safe,” Bennett said.
Your safety should always be the first priority, so if you need to exit your car, make sure you are in a safe place to do so. If anyone is hurt, call the local authorities immediately. Bennett gave a helpful tip to mention ANY pain or discomfort to the police so they can include it in their report even if you feel you don’t need immediate medical attention. This can help you later down the road if your pain becomes worse and you need to prove it was a result of the accident.
Always Call the Police
Many people wonder if they need to call the police after a car accident. The answer is almost always. As Bennett mentioned, it’s never a good idea to make verbal agreements with the other party involved. A police officer will write a report of what happened, including any important details that might be to your advantage later on.
The police will also direct traffic around your vehicle, keeping you and everyone involved safe.
The moments after a car accident can be chaotic, but it’s important to try and think ahead. You may need to file a claim against the person responsible for your accident later on so, if you are able, it is a good idea to take pictures of the accident scene and your injuries and collect contact information from any witnesses. These things can serve as evidence to support your claim.
